The two magnolia paintings on my May 2021 exhibition represent special memories for me. From the upstairs veranda of the Tatham Art Gallery I used to watch the enormous flowers of the old magnolia grandiflora trees in the Mayor’s Garden. My audible wishes for a knight on a white horse to pick me one fell on deaf ears. I just wanted to smell the heavenly perfume. Around the corner, near the Legislature gate, the tulip magnolias with their crooked woody stems in early spring were within easy reach. I just smiled nicely at the security guard.
